Grounding Sheets and Gout: The Claims

Short answer: no. There is no study, small or large, that has tested grounding sheets specifically on gout or uric acid levels. What exists is a handful of small studies on general inflammation and blood markers, plus a lot of marketing that borrows those findings and applies them to gout without evidence.

The short answer

Grounding sheets have never been studied on gout. The closest research looks at general inflammation and blood viscosity in tiny, early-stage trials. Fine to try for comfort and sleep during a flare, not a substitute for uric-acid management or your doctor’s plan.

What is gout, and why do people search for grounding as a fix?

Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis caused by uric acid crystals building up in a joint, most often the big toe. Flares are sudden, sharp and swollen, and the pain can make even a bedsheet touching your foot unbearable. People searching for relief tend to land on anything that promises to calm inflammation, and grounding sheets show up in that search because inflammation is one of the benefits the earthing world claims most often.

The problem is that “inflammation” in grounding research and “inflammation” in gout are not the same thing. Gout inflammation is driven by crystal deposits triggering a specific immune response. The grounding studies referenced below never tested that pathway.

What does the grounding research actually measure?

Grounding and Inflammation: What the Research Actually Measures covers this in more depth, but here is the honest summary. The Oschman, Chevalier and Brown (2015) paper in the Journal of Inflammation Research is a narrative review, not a clinical trial. It proposes that electrons from the earth’s surface could act as antioxidants, neutralizing free radicals and calming inflammation. That is a hypothesis about a mechanism, argued by researchers who are also connected to the earthing industry. It has not been proven in a controlled trial.

Chevalier’s 2013 study on blood viscosity is the other piece people point to. It found that grounding reduced red-blood-cell clumping in a very small sample, which the authors linked to lower cardiovascular strain. Interesting, but tiny, and it says nothing about joint crystals or uric acid.

Sokal and Sokal (2011) looked at a wider panel, including calcium, phosphorus and glucose markers, again in small groups with mixed designs. None of these papers examined gout, purine metabolism, or uric acid clearance.

Has anyone studied grounding specifically for gout?

No. Searching the available literature turns up zero trials on grounding and gout. What you will find instead are blog posts and product pages that take the general inflammation hypothesis and stretch it to cover gout, arthritis and joint pain broadly. Grounding Sheets for Arthritis: Honest Look runs into the same gap: plenty of inflammation theory, no disease-specific data.

Claim Studied in grounding research? What the evidence actually shows
General inflammation markers Proposed, not tested in a trial Oschman et al. (2015) argue a possible antioxidant mechanism. This is a hypothesis paper, not a controlled study.
Blood viscosity / red-cell clumping Yes, one small study Chevalier (2013) reported reduced clumping in a very small sample. Needs replication.
Sleep quality and subjective stress Yes, the most-cited finding Ghaly & Teplitz (2004) found improved self-reported sleep and cortisol rhythm in a small, unblinded pilot.
Uric acid levels or gout flares No dedicated studies found Not researched. Any claim connecting grounding to gout specifically is extrapolation, not data.

Could a grounding sheet still help you manage a gout flare?

Maybe, indirectly, and it is worth being precise about what that “maybe” covers. If a weighted, tight sheet or a hot night is making a flare worse, switching to a cool, breathable grounding sheet could improve comfort the same way any decent cotton sheet would, conductive fibers aside. If poor sleep is stacking on top of your pain, and the small sleep studies hold up for you personally, that is a real, if modest, upside. Grounding Sheets for Sleep: Can Earthing Improve Your Nights? walks through what that evidence can and cannot promise.

What it will not do is lower your uric acid, dissolve crystals, or replace the medication and diet changes that actually treat gout. If a product page tells you otherwise, that is a promise the research does not back.

Is it safe to try grounding sheets if you have gout?

Electrically, yes, for most people. The sheet connects to your outlet’s ground pin, not to live power, so the actual current involved is minimal. The real risk sits with the wiring, not the sheet: a genuinely miswired outlet is the failure point, which is why a cheap outlet tester is worth the ten dollars before you plug anything in.

Medically, gout itself is not a known contraindication for grounding. But many people with gout are managing other conditions alongside it, kidney function, diabetes, high blood pressure, and taking medication like allopurinol or colchicine. None of the grounding studies looked at drug interactions or kidney load, so if you are on medication for gout or a related condition, run it by your doctor first rather than assuming it is automatically fine.

Should you talk to a doctor before trying one?

If your gout is new, worsening, or you are on medication that affects your kidneys or heart rhythm, yes, mention it at your next visit. This is not because grounding sheets carry a known specific danger for gout patients, it is because there is no research ruling one out either, and gout medication management is not something to adjust based on a bedsheet.

If you already have a stable gout management plan and just want a comfortable, breathable sheet to sleep on during flares, that is a low-stakes decision you can make on your own.
